We bought the cheapest factory 4WD Nissan Patrol Turbo Diesel GU coil cab Ute for just $11,500 and our mission is to build it into an insanely capable tourer on a proper budget. We are going to show you exactly what each modification or repairs costs us. Plus, we are going to give you tips on how you can do something similar.
In the second half of this episode we show you how to sound deaden the cabin of your 4WD at home with Dynamat.
DYNAMAT GUIDE
CLEANING YOUR VEHICLE
Jocko first tackles this DIY Dynamite Sound Deadening project by removing the interior of the 4WD. This is where we take out the seats, remove the centre console and the carpet.
Because of the state of the interior of this vehicle, we made sure to give the bare interior a clean and a good vacuum.
The best results from Dynamite is ensuring at least the key areas are covered with the product like the firewall and the footwell. If you have enough Dynamat, you can even apply the matting behind the panels of your doors and the roof of your 4WD.

TAKE YOUR TIME
Make sure you take your time putting the Dynamat down and really ensuring it is properly stuck to the surface nicely.
Also avoid covering things such as grommets in the floor that are for letting out water, and don’t cover any of the mounting holes for seat or cover any wiring as well.
Provided you install Dynamat properly, using tools like the Dynamat Roller to make certain no air is between the floor and the matting and use the Dynamat Finishing Tape on the edges and gaps to guarantee no water can get trapped in your 4WD.
SIMPLE INSTALLATION
We cut sections from the Dynamat to size to fit the areas we wished to cover and used the Dynamat Roller to press down every part of the sound deadener we applied and used the Dynamat Tape to seal off all the edges of the matting.
HEAT REDUCTION AND SOUND DEADENING
Not only does Dynamat reduce sound coming into the cabin, it is really good at reducing the amount of heat entering the vehicle. Like the GU Patrol in this video, some cars dump pipe is right behind the firewall, and the exhaust runs underneath the passenger footwell.
Overtime certain sections on the vehicle - especially on long trips and in modified 4WDs - can become quite hot, so Dynamat can keep out the high temperatures and make for more comfortable trips
DECIBEL TESTED
Previously to this build, we measured the decibel output of driving a stock Dual Cab 79 Series Toyota Landcruiser, then installed Dynamat and just look at the results!
DYNAMAT SOUND DEADENING IN SOOTY MK2
Just like this budget GU, Shauno has chosen to upgrade the noise and heat reduction capabilities in the rebuild of his iconic 80 Series Landcruiser, Sooty.
While the dash was removed during the rebuilding process, Shaun felt it was the perfect opportunity to completely cover the interior of his new 80 series in Dynamat - something he always wished he did in the original Sooty.
