Cape York is the ultimate destination for many 4WDers not only in Australia but around the world! If you have never done a dream trip up here before, here is a couple of handy tips to make sure you have the time of your life.
Watch Graham give you the essential 3 tips for tackling Cape York in your 4WD
TIP 1 – TIMING
If you can avoid the school holiday period - June, July, August – do so, because around this time the whole Cape becomes very busy. Not an essential or major piece of advice, but it does make it a bit more pleasant when you have the whole place to yourself, the campsites and tracks are less crowded, and it makes for a much nice trip to the tip!
TIP 2 – WATER CROSSINGS
Now, we know it can be a little bit scary and daunting for someone who isn’t very experienced in water crossings and has never done as many as there are up here in Cape York – but if you are worried about the notorious water crossings the Cape is famous for, try do your trip sometime after the winter school holidays. After this time of the year the water levels tend to be at their lowest, making the water crossings a heck of a lot easier.
TIP 3 – FUEL
This tip centres around fuel economy and fuel range. Don’t worry so much about having a long-range fuel tank because fuel supplies are everywhere up here in Cape York. Most modern vehicles like Dual Cab 4WD Utes have around a 75L fuel tank, which allows for about 500 kilometres of hard-core off-roading. With this level of fuel economy and a tank that allows for this much range while 4WDing means you can do pretty much everything you want up in Cape York.
